What Causes Bump On The Inside Of Forearm?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Oct 2014
Question: 5 days ago I noticed a slightly swelled area or bump on the inside of my left forearm right below the crease in my inner elbow. At first I did not think much of it but I began to have a crawling or bubbling sensation down my left forearm to my wrist, as well as a general weak feeling in my left arm. These sensations came and gone and did not consist for very long. I went to visit a doctor at a walk in clinic to explain my symptoms and show the affected area and she suggested that it may be a change in the muscle since my left side is my dominant side. The enlarged area has not seemed to get any bigger or smaller and when I press and feel it with my fingers, it feels very similar to muscle. I have not really felt any constant pain associated with this but have had some discomfort and small pains that have come and gone in my left arm, not really focused on the bump area. Once I arrived home from the clinic I attempted to ice the bump for 20 minutes to see if that would help but i don't believe it has.

I have now noticed that I am experiencing a burning like pain under the skin on the top of my forearm (opposite side to the bump). This sensation feels similar to the burning sensation that one may get from holding a heavy object for too long or working out a muscle at the gym.The doctor that i saw today felt my lymph nodes and said that everything appeared to be normal but did recommend that I have an ultrasound done. What concerns me is that I have not done much in terms of strenuous physical activity for my muscle to feel this way.
I am hoping that this explanation of my symptoms will get me a second opinion as to what may be causing this and what I should do about it.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
rule out muscle inflammation

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

Thank you for posting your query on HCM.

Well, looking into your query I would like to tell you that it will be very difficult to give you a diagnosis based on the symptoms as they are very non specific and don't fit into any particular criteria . But looking at whole scenario, I agree with your treating doctor to get Ultrasound done .

Plus there is a possibility of myositis, focal myositis can present like this too. So I would also advise to get muscle enzymes CPK , LDH and Aldolase done to rule that out. Inflammation in muscles needs to be ruled out.

You can discuss this with your treating physician and get these tests done.

Take care.

Thank you for the opinion. In terms of Myositis, is this something of great concern? I quickly looked at this online and read that a cause of it could be from a viral infection. I have had some issues with what seemed to be an oral infection - constant tonsil stones, canker sores on the tongue, some cold like symptoms. Could this be related? Are there anymore symptoms I should be aware of that may point more towards myosotis?
Thank you

Dear Madam,

Thank you for reverting back.

It would be difficult to find out the reasons for myositis as it can be triggered by any event most commonly with infections . But we first need to see whether its myositis or not .

It can be well established by the blood tests that I have suggested to you , it gives a vague kind of picture in the beginning so high degree of suspicion is required to pick it up . It also results in muscle pain and fatigue which many people complain.

Thank you again doctor. Is there any reason to consider something more serious such as lymphoma? I do not believe I have any family history of genetic diseases but I want to arm myself with as much information as possible for when I speak to my family doctor. Any other thoughts or opinions are much appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Less likely.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

Thank you for reverting back.

Well I understand your concern . You can ask anything you like as we are there to help you only . Lymphoma doesnt look like a possibility in your case as there are several other features like weight loss , night sweats , lymphadenopathy etc. which you dont report any so seems like a remote thing.

Also get your thyroid levels , calcium levels , Vitamin D levels checked .
