What Causes Bump On The Outside Of Eye Socket?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Mar 2015
Question: i have a bump inside my eye socket. referring to the right eye; about 2/3 way to the outside of the eye socket under the eyebrow. I noticed it recently ; i felt my eyes were tried and so when I started to squeeze my eyes i noticed it; it's a somewhat hard bump not soft and seems attached to bone. it's at edge of eye socket and if I touch it i can feel it seems to go into the socket. If press on it I can feel some minute pain.

I did couple years ago feel similar bump about half inch on same side above my eyebrow. it's a small hard bump (doesn't move; seems fused to bone); I asked my general practitioner; she didn't seem too worries; said; you probably bumped your head some time ago and don't think you should be worried about it. and that if it changed size to have it looked it. That was 2 years ago and it hasn't changed; but I'm more concerned now that I feel on same size this bump at my eyesocket area (it's not visible ; it's not pointy ; but more of a soft bump maybe 1/4"); Basically if I compare to my other eye socket in same area; this side feels thicker than the other side and i put pressure on it I feel some pain.

Brief Answer:
it seems to be an orbital dermoid cyst.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query and gone through the picture you provided.

Considering your description and the picture ,it seems to be an Orbital Dermoid Cyst.
This is a benign tumor compound with normal cells. These tumors contain normal-appearing tissue in an abnormal location.
An orbital dermoid is typically found in association with the bones of the eye socket and for this reason you feel it like fused with the bone.In adults these cysts have vague borders and it is not pointy or with define borders.
Usually they are only a cosmetic concern and usually are removed only for this reason because they don't cause any serious health problem.Only in rare cases when the cyst is big in size can cause problems with vision.

I would suggest to consult your physician to confirm the diagnosis.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any other question or doubt to clarify.I will be happy to help.

Kind regards,

Hi Dr. Rovera
Thank you for your answer. That was going to be me first biggest concern as I'm sure you always get; Is it cancerous? Of course you can't say for sure but it seems based on what I described your pretty confident this wouldn't be malignant?

is it common that I had formed a bump above my eyebrow and then couple years later without that changing in size; i have one in the eyesocket location? are they prone to growing in size over time typically or do they grow in a perod and stay steady?

I ask because I do feel a little discomfort in that area of my eye (my eye tends to recently get more tired than the other; perhaps as I blink it interacts with the bump and I guess if it was to increase in size it would likely affect it more.

thank you for the response so far.

Brief Answer:
it is not cancerous.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Dermoid cysts are benign tumors.Every mass formed in body is called a tumor. This doesn't mean it is cancer.

Dermoid cysts are not cancerous. The cyst consist in normal cells (not cancerous ones) that are found in an abnormal location like the orbital area.It is not a malign lesion.

In your case the location of this bump, it's features in touch are very characteristic for dermoid cyst.

In adults, dermoids may become symptomatic for the first time and grow considerably over a year.So these lesions can appear years before as small lesions and then be dormant for many years, until they can increase their size.
Sometimes they have an intermittent growth .This means that they can grow and then stay stable and after some time grow again.

They need evaluation to determine their size and exact location because if they are located too deep can cause problems with the eye ,pushing the eye downward.
Since the cyst has increased in size ,it can cause symptoms of eye discomfort, eye tiredness.

I would suggest to get it examined. You may need to do an X-ray or MRI to determine the exact size and localization of the cyst,if it has affected or can affect in future eye structures.
Based on these studies ,your doctor may recommend or no to remove it.

Feel free to ask if you have any question.
Take care,

Dr.Rovena
