Posted on Sat, 13 Dec 2014
Question: Hello,
Recently after a long car ride and what I felt like were to tight of pants I felt some uncomfortably in my groin area. That evening I did masturbate and shortly after I started experiencing pain at the tip of my penis when urinating. It is bearable but still painful. I have been drinking a lot of water and have taken some Ibuprofen and have noticed some relief from pain during urination. I have had no sex for the past 3 weeks and before that only with my wife. Symptoms came on very quickly. I noticed a bit of irritation or itching in my shaft as well but on recently. This is the 6th day of symptoms. What do you believe this could be and what should I do?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
UTI to be ruled out.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,

This is unlikely related to the car ride.
Pain, especially burning sensation on urination is a feature of urinary tract infection. This is more likely if there is associated increased frequency of urination.
A urine routine examination will help us to confirm or exclude.
If confirmed, this can be treated with antibiotics like norfloxacin or cefixime for 5-7 days. Your doctor will guide you.

Meanwhile, drink enough oral fluids and continue analgesic if needed.

Hope this will answer your query.
I will be happy to help if you have further questions.
Wishing for a faster cure.
Thank you.

Thank you for the direction.

I went and had my urine tested. After 24 hours nothing grew and they said everything looked clear. The burning continued for several more days, slowly getting better. I drank water a lot and tried to take it easy on that region.

I noticed very red swelling and pain while urinating at the tip of my penis while this was going on, but that has also cleared without treatment?

Do you know what could have caused these symptoms as I would like to avoid repeating this episode.

Thank you, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
See detailed answer below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,

Happy to hear that your symptoms are getting better.

Pain during urination is most commonly caused by UTI. But as the culture was negative, this is ruled out.

With history of associated red swelling, another possibility is a soft tissue infection near the meatus leading to mucosal irritation of distal urethra. This also can cause pain during urination. Such infection is very rare at this site, and lets hope it will not recur. Just keep the area always clean and dry.

If you had used some lubricants during masturbation, this may be caused by sensitivity too, and better to avoid further exposure.

Hope now you got cleared.
Wishing you good health.
Thank you.
