default
Posted on Wed, 26 Aug 2015
Question: My 72 year old mother is constantly complaining of a burning sensation while urinating. Thus far she has tested negative for any infection . UTIs etc. She is currently taking the following meds. nizatidine, pantoprazole, synthroid, and Atenolol. Is it possible this might be the result of a side effect from one of these meds or interaction from them.

Brief Answer:
Unlikely to be related to the medication

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

The medication you listed aren't usually associated with burning urination. A UTI is the most likely cause. A urinalysis and culture sensitivity testing should be repeated. If no evidence of an infection is found then an ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis or x ray KUB can be done to look for a small stone or concretions in the bladder or ureter that may be causing these symptoms. Urine alkalinization with cranberry juice or potassium citrate can be attempted if concretions or a small stone is found and the urine is acidic w.r.t its ph. Empirically a single dose of monurol ( Fosfomycin) can be given to treat cystitis if the burning persists and no other cause is identifiable.
