default
Posted on Mon, 24 Oct 2016
Question: Hello, I have been experiencing a burning/acidy sensation in stomach, at times dull ache. Symptoms can improve when eating a meal, but return an hour or so later. No issues in defecation or urination. No nausea. Symptoms worse when drinking any liquid, particularly cool water. Symptoms first appeared 10 days ago but have not totally disappeared. Had a bad stomach virus in XXXXXXX and had similar symptoms (but worse); virus disappered after 12 to 14 days.

Brief Answer:
Consider taking Zantac 150 mg twice a day

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

You may have a mild gastritis/duodenitis (inflammation of the stomach or first part of intestine). Many people have this at some time. Acid reducers or acid blockers taken for several weeks can allow it to heal. These are now sold without prescription at pharmacies. I recommend starting with Zantac 150 mg taken twice a day.

Zantac is an acid reducer and is quite safe. There are acid blockers such as Nexium and Prilosec, but I generally do not recommend these to start with because they can cause rebound of symptoms when discontinued and other problems.

For the next few weeks, avoid citrus, caffeine, alcohol, peppermint, and highly spiced food. Eat smaller amounts at a time as this causes less stomach distention and associated acid production.

If your symptoms get worse or if this regimen does not start to help significantly in the next 2 weeks, OR if your stools look black and tarry or bloody, then go in to be seen. Otherwise, the Zantac should help. You may need to take the Zantac for 6 weeks to heal up.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.
