What Causes Burning Sensations In Toes?

Question: Hi Doctor,
My feet fingers are giving burning sensation this summer (unlike earlier rather these used to be on colder side few years back even in summers). Feels like a lot of heat energy is radiating from my toe area underneath fingers and feels like to soak my feet in cold water for better feeling. Please suggest what could be the reason and treatment for same.

Burning feet can be due to simple causes like over use/alcoholism/ B complex deficiency.. to more complex conditions like nerve involvements ( pinching of local nerve / spinal nerve ) like tarsal tunnel syndrome/ lumber spondylosis. or neuropathies in diabetes/ hypothyroidism.
But looking at your age/ symptoms being varied from cold legs to hot feeling in legs... indicates Nerve involvement to be more likely the cause.
- still an over all evaluation of health to exclude other causes & specific neurological investigations like CT scan/ MRI of the feet/ lumber spine & also exclusion of diabetes, thyroid disorder should be the approach to the problem.
to consult your family physician for primary assessment followed by treatment for simpler causes / referral to orthopedic surgeon for nerve pinching would give you specific guidance for the problem.
- Treatment would be cause specific .. like management of vitamin deficiencies, control of diabetes , thyroid problem along with B complex supplements / Medications like anti inflammatory drugs, vitamin B 12,physiotherapy, use proper foot wear/ orthotics ( inserts , arch supprts) as per orthopedic advise, surgery to correct nerve damage or pinching.
- Self care -
- Control / stop alcohol
- wear cotton socks / specially designed foot wear or Orthotics
- dip you feet in cold water & have symptomatic relief,
