Posted on Mon, 5 May 2014
Question: I just had an endoscopy done today and one of the findings was monilial esophagitis and congested mucosa in the esophagus and when I looked up the possible causes I became extremely alarmed I am asking if there are other causes other than the 7 listed including HIV and cancer

Brief Answer: see below Detailed Answer: the are many causes of monilial or candida esophagitis. The classic textbook problem is from having HIV/AIDS however don't get alarmed, as there are many other causes for this: - alcohol abuse - recent chemotherapy for cancer - use of steroids (particularly inhaled steroids for asthma for example) - esophageal "stasis", or accumulation of food in the esophagus for other problems, such as poor motility of the esophagus (classic example is from "achalasia" of the esophagus) - cancer, particularly cancers of the blood - malnutrition - advanced age - using immunosuppressant medications - very rarely it can happen without predisposing factors in healthy patients. Nevertheless i would still suggest a full work up with your doctor, to make sure nothing is missed. Hope that helps
