default
Posted on Mon, 16 Jun 2014
Question: I am 74 years old and suffer with osteo-arthritis and Pagets disease at times my fingers and hand will lock up and go into a clinch or spasm where they will seem as if they have a mind of their own...they will stay that way for a few minutes and then slowly release themselves ...it is quite painful. It also happens with my feet and toes....there was a time when I could take quinine pills and that lelped greatly, but they have been banned . I can't say this is from the Pagets because I have had this long before I was diagnosed with this disease..What can I expect from this disease..Be honest with me please

Brief Answer:
Multiple factors are responsible

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for posting
I have gone through your suffering, the spasms you have are medically known as carpopedal spasm. They may occur because of -
1. Deficiency of calcium, magnesium and vitamin D and increased level of phosphorus.
2. Muscle fatigue and dehydration because of excessive vomiting.
3. Thyroid disorder
In the follow up query please tell me about blood test for vitamin D, calcium and thyroid hormone
There are stretching exercises you can do. These stretches will help keep your muscles from getting shorter or tighter. Being active will also help keep your muscles loose. Aerobic exercise, especially swimming, and strength building exercises are both helpful. To sum up stretching exercises are must 4-5 times a day, especially before going to bed.
Take balanced diet rich in calcium (1000mg/day) and vitamin D (1000 i.u. /day) along with vitaminB12, B6.
Hope this helps, I shall be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
