Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation and salt water gargling

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.

Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. Flu shot is against specific strain of virus, which is suspected to be too dangerous. There are too many viruses around and you have infection from one of them. Present infection not related to flu shot

2. Good to know you have no fever.

3. Diminished hearing is due to congestion of the Eustachian tube. Cough is due to postnasal drip of secretions, affecting the throat.

4. Continue taking fluids, hot tea, and orange juice. Chicken soup is important as it improves nutrition.

5. Additionally Steam inhalation for atleast 5 minutes along with salt water gargling for 2-3 minutes, 2-3 times a day is essential to reduce congestion. To reduce further production of secretions, antihistamine like cetrizine needs to be taken twice a day. Throat soothening agents like lozenges can be taken to reduce cough or throat irritation.

6. If fever starts again, paracetamol along with antibiotic like azithromycin needs to be taken. Take rest and continue normal diet. Comtrex can be taken as necessary, if nasal block is present.

Hope it helps.

I have been doing all you suggested almost from the start last week. In addition to the diminished hearing in my left ear the pain is like a 8 on a 1-10 scale. Tylenol has not helped the pain just fever. Can not get into my PCP until Tuesday 16th. What can I do for pain until then?

Brief Answer:
Needs antibiotics and ear checkup

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for asking again.

You seem to have very severe pain, which suggests not only eustachian tube block, but also possible inner ear infection.

You need to start on macrolide antibiotics like azithromycin along with antihistamine like cetrizine.
For pain, if not ibuprofen, you can try other NSAIDS like celecoxib, naproxen.
Steam inhalation and salt water gargling are very important and needs to be continued.
Antibiotics are necessary, as possible Acute suppurative otitis media might have occurred in the ear looking at the pain. The ear drum could rupture, if there is more fluid accumulation. Drainage of fluid maybe necessary, if pain persists. Meet an ENT specialist or take prescription from your doctor at the earliest.

Hope it helps.
