Question : i been having some discomfort in my chest for a few days. i have been taking 25mg metoprolol for 7 yrs now. was prescribed this for mitral valve prolapse. Doctors now say i don't have mitral valve prolapse but to still continue taking my pills for palpitation.
I used to get this same discomfort every other day 30 minutes after taking my medicine. But now its just a constant feeling as soon as i get up in the morning. i do get alot of heart burn but dont take much but tums for it. At times the discomfort makes me feel like i have to cough. I am a truck driver and that discomfort gets bit worse when i start driving. Do you know what may be going on?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome on HCM!

I passed carefully through your concern and would like to explain that:

- as far as your cardiac echo doesn't reveal any structural and functional heart disorder,
-facing also the non-specific nature of your chest discomfort (prolonged discomfort modulated by posture),

a cardiac responsible cause is unlikely to be blamed.

Instead, other potential causes should be carefully consider as triggering factors of your clinical symptomatology.

Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) and possible hiatal hernia should be sought first.

In this regard, gastric anti-secretor drugs (such as pantoprazole, omeprazole, etc.) could be beneficial at releasing your disturbances.

If necessary, a fibrogastroscopy would be helpful to confirm the diagnosis.

Also, you need to avoid spicy and fatty food products, heavy alcoholic drinks and better have frequent and small portions of food instead of plenty amounts.

You need to discuss with your attending doctor on the above mentioned issues.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

In case of any further uncertainties, feel free to ask me again.

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
