Question : Dad had a cold and chest congestion and I now it except. My nose isn't runny. I have a cough and if I talk to much I get horse and I don't feel bad or have a fever. My throat hurts if it is dry and the cough seems worse upon waking and at night time. Chest hurts when I cough and sometimes if I have to cough, I can feel it when I breathe. Chest doesn't hurt all the time. Been taking Mucinex fast day and night. Had this since Friday. Doesn't seem worse or better.XXXX

I have gone through your query. Your problem can be most likely lower respiratory infection. If you provide some more information it will be helpful
Is the cough productive (with sputum)? If productive colour of sputum?
Any breathlessness?

Robitussin will be more helpful than mucinex. Taking antihistamines like cetirizine is also good. You can take chewable vitamin C, steam inhalation , take warm fluids like tea with lemon and honey ,warm chicken soup with pepper. You may need antibiotic therapy if there is no improvement. I would suggest broad spectrum antibiotics like Co-amoxiclav or azithromycin in such case. You can approach your GP in that case.
