default
Posted on Tue, 16 Sep 2014
Question: Most of my symptoms began when i got sick while deployed in afghanistan. I had to keep running to the bathroom because of diarrhea. I ate their afghan food alot while deployed and ever since my stomach hasnt been the same. This was in august of 2011. I now continue to have diarrhea, sudden bowel movemnets, green stool quite often and a pain in abdomen that feels like tearing or reay bad fullness. My stool is almost always soft and broken and switches from brown to green. What could this be?

Please follow the suggestions below...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

You are saying that you suffer from diarrhea for three years and it means that you have chronic diarrhea , you need investigations to be accurately diagnosed.

I kindly would like to ask you some questions like:
-do you have blood in stools?
-do you have fever?
- do you have some times diarrhea and others constipation?
- if you have done exams like blood work, biochemical exams, fecal exams please upload those to me.
Your symptoms are suggestive for :
- Inflammatory bowel disease,
- Food intolerance
- bowel infection (infection disease)
- Irritable bowel syndrome

If I were your treating doctor I would recommend you to run further exams like:
-examination of stool for ova/parasites
- culture of feces
- colonoscopy
-malabsorption tests

Depending on the results, specific treatment will be prescribed.

Wish fast recovery!

I have no blood in my stool and no fever. I do however have alot of undigested food in my stool and an extreme amount of gas. Right now im taking a fiber medication similar to metamucil and it kinda helps with th sudden bowel movement. When i wasnt taking it i would go from having 4 to 5 bowel movements to having maybe 1. I have had bloodwork done quite a bit in the past year and nothing has been brought to my attention.

Brief Answer:
Further tests are needed...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Thank you for providing additional information.

I am happy to know that there is not blood in your stool and you are not dealing with fever.

The fact that you have undigested food in your stool make me think of:
- indigestion: food allergy
- infectious disease of the bowels
- Coeliac disease

It is necessary to run:
- malabsorption/intolerance tests
- culture of stool for pathogenic bacteria/fungus
- examination of stool for ova/parasites
- measure IgA level and run duodenum biopsy during upper endoscopy to rule out coeliac disease

Therefore, it is necessary to consult with GI specialist as soon as possible to determine the right diagnosis.

Can you give the name of your fiber medication? Usually, they are used to improve constipation, thus, increasing bowel movements. It sounds strange to use it while you are having diarrhea. However, I need to have the name for further assistance.

Brief Answer:
Still insist to have the requested tests done...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Ok then, I still insist to run the examinations as mentioned earlier to identify what the real problem in your bowels is.

Looking forward to have the tests reports in for further assistance!
