What Causes Chronic Mitochondrial Damage With An Ebv Infection?

default
Posted on Fri, 1 Jul 2016
Question: I'm trying to find information about the chronic mitochondrial damage that may occur with an ebv infection
Long story but my son was diagnosed w mitochondrial disease (after several genetic tests and a muscle biopsy) it was determined not to be genetic and was determined to be secondary (to what undetermined) and I'm hoping to collect some information before I propose this to his physicians

apologies I was not very clear in the original inquiry. I am attempting to find research because I feel the mitochondrial disease is a misdiagnosis. I believe the mitochondria are not functioning but I believe its because of infections, not disease. I'm wondering how to research this so that I can approach my sons physicians.

Brief Answer:
Epstein Barr virus (EBV) & chronic mitochondrial damage

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

There is some report of mitochondrial dysfunction associated with post-infective fatigue after acute infection with Epstein Barr virus (EBV).
Patients with chronic fatigue syndrome may have elevated titers of antibody to EBV.
Several genes including interferon stimulated gene, cyclin-dependent kinase 8, E2F transcription factor 2, cyclin-dependent kinase 8 & ACTN2 (actinin, alpha 2 ) known to be regulated during EBV infection were differentially expressed in post-infective fatigue cases following Epstein Barr virus infection .
Several of the differentially expressed genes affect mitochondrial functions including fatty acid metabolism and the cell cycle.
Certain viruses including EBV can play as modulators of Mitochondrial Functions.
Viral Control of Mitochondrial Apoptosis has been linked with EBV mediated coordinated expression of several gene products.
The information is a bit technical;hopefully it serves your purpose.
