What Causes Chronic Swollen Nasal Passage, Sinus Filled With Mucus And Fatigue?

default
Posted on Wed, 16 Mar 2016
Question: I have chronic swollen nasal passages and my sinus' are always filled with mucus. I have serious problems with fatigue. I believe it may be because I am not breathing well with the swollen nasal passages. I can put on a breathe right strip and after about 15 minutes the tiredness goes away. I am currently taking singular, Allegra, and Flonase. This doesn't seem to help. What should my next step be?

Brief Answer:
Next step is to find the root cause of issue !!!

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for consulting at my virtual clinic!
I have carefully worked through your case, and can well realize your health worries. Being your physician, I will take care all of your medical concerns today and will put my best efforts to get you out of this situation.

We need to see the root cause of your swollen, inflamed, congested and engorged nasal passages.

Filled sinuses mean there is mucous in them due to infection and inflamed mucosal lining (inner walls) of the sinuses.

In this situation you are unable to breathe normal and Oxygen debt is created causing fatigue and malaise. Another reason in such a clinical setting is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (sleep pattern is disturbed due to frequent waking at night as a result of respiratory passage blockage). In this context I am also interested to see your body weight, height and waist circumference--to calculate your body mass index (BMI). High BMI (more than 25 is taken abnormal and is associated with sleep disturbances and weakness).

We need to see the cause of allergy that is causing irritation to the nasal and sinus mucosa. Frequently seen causes may be:-
Fomites
animal dander
grass, trees, pollen allergy.
extremes of temperature.
direct air etc.

Highest Recommendation :-
You need to consult an Otorhinolarngologist for thorough evaluation and management accordingly. You may be having Nasal septal defect, Nasal polyps or other issues of nose and sinuses around nose.

Keep taking the medications you are on as the are all mandatory. I usually prefer to add systemic Corticosteroid too in the form of nasal spray. Definitive treatment can be decided after Otorhinolarngologist examination of course.

Hope I answered all of your questions. Let me know if you have further clinical concerns or doubts. I will be more than happy to get back to you with my expert opinion. I do have sleep apnea. I need to lose about 50lbs, which I am working on. But I am very congested in the mornings. After I am awake for awhile the yawning starts. If I use a saline to empty the sinuses then the yawning stops. I can tell a huge difference in my breathing at that point. But after awhile the process just starts over again.

Welcome back with a follow-up query. I am glad to assist you today.

You have obvious signs of Obstructive sleep apnea and there is a mandatory need for you to get yourself evaluated by a Sleep Apnea Specialist. He will evaluate the case and after careful examination and investigations, if needed, he may refer you to an ENT Specialist for management of any defects in nose and nasopharynx.

Saline nasal douches with lukewarm water, and gargles arw the best ones for you. steam inhalation and keep a warm mist vaporizer in your room will soothe your respiration and will assist in weakness and snoozing during daytime.

Reducing body weight will reduce your troubles many folds. Keep a regularity on this project to.
