What Causes Clicking Sound In The Jaws While Yawning?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Mar 2017
Question: I am a 76 year old woman. My jaw has begun to crack when I yawn or open my mouth widely. It makes quite a loud crack. How can I stop the "crack"? No pain, just a sensation of the click and a loud crack. I do have mild arthritis. I take metformin, levothyroxine, altorvastatin and Zantac.

Brief Answer:
With no pain, I will not get worried. Observe only? For how long now?

Detailed Answer:
HI and thanks for contacting healthcare magic.

I have reviewed your information fully. While this clearly shows something going on with the joints, there are not many reflags that need to be addressed as there is no pain, no difficulty opening and closing the mouth or inability to chew food. We could want to explore all the articulations to establish where the origin is but no one would be treating a joint problem that causes no inconveniences. For this reason, I suggest that you stay calm and monitor only. Do not precipitate into aggressively investigating just for us to know and not act on.

To stop the crack, try yawning while avoiding to open the mouth rapidly. Be gentle as you do this. If you however experience any pain or difficulties using the mouth as before, at that time we would certainly need to explore further.

I hope this sheds some light and provides guidance on how to monitor and when to seek immediate help. Feel free to follow with me if certain aspects are not very clear to you.

Kind regards!
