What Causes Clicking Sound In The Throat While Swallowing?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Feb 2017
Question: I have had a clicking sound when I swallow saliva for about 11 weeks. It also feels like something is stuck in my throat sometimes. I have had a neck US for my thyroid and bloodwork which both came back normal. I tried acid reflux medicine, but it made no difference and made me feel sicker.

Brief Answer:
Jaw junction problems/strep throat/blocked Eustachian tube/anxiety...

Detailed Answer:
Hi my dear,

I understand your concern.

You say to have a clicking sound when you swallow saliva for about 11 weeks. Can you please specify where you have this sound: jaw junction? throat? near ear?
Blocked Eustachian tube/swollen throat/jaw junction problems should consider and rule out.

You are also feeling like something is stuck in your throat sometimes. If you suffer of chronic tonsillitis or have frequent colds, that explains why you have this feeling.

Being nervous, anxious especially if psychologically overload, that is also explaining this feeling.

Thyroid and blood work both came back normal.

Acid reflux or other upper GI problems are also to consider. However, I'd recommend to run upper endoscopy to evaluate the esophagus and other upper GI passages before determining the right diagnosis.

Looking forward to have the requested details in.

Thank you. The click is right above where the Adam's apple would be. It doesn't happen when I swallow food or water. Only a dry swallow. My doctor said that she didn't feel swollen lymph nodes and the neck US said no cervical lymph nodes were swollen.

I've been very anxious lately. Scared that this could be cancer. I've been reassured by my doctor that it's not, but until it goes away I feel scared.

Brief Answer:
It's normal to have the click-feeling when swallowing dry saliva...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back my dear,

Ok, thank you for additional details.

From what you are saying so far, and with the negative tests you did so far, I too think you are too anxious recently and are over-reacting.
And in fact, you have nothing to be so anxious.

So, try to relax. Valeriana/chamomile/passiflora supplements can help.
Keep busy-minded, so won't over-think of this problem too.

Again, that is not a sign of cancer.

By the way, it is normal to have that click when swallow dry saliva, but you were only noticing it 11 weeks ago. I'm sure that click was always there when you have swallowed dry saliva as for any other normal and healthy person.

All the best and God bless!
Enjoy life! Don't think about it.

Thank you very much! This started right before my sister got PET scan results. Thank
God she is fine, but waiting for those results are very stressful. Will this go away?
