Question: if I have had hiv for 15 years or so would the cheek swab still detect the virus or might I be producing so low of an antibody count that it wouldn't?

Brief Answer:
Yes it will detect if you are positive

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Health care magic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

Both swab test from either cheek or saliva is likely to detect virus if present in the body. In addition 15 years is long time and it is possible that you would have manifested other symptoms of HIV and AIDS if you were infected.

Slow production of antibody does not prevent detection of virus by swab test. In rapid produces the test becomes positive in three months and in slow produces of antibody it may take upto six months.

I hope this helps you.
If you have more questions feel free to write back to me.
Thanks and regards.

I suffer from cluster head aches, night sweats, fatigue, fairly frequent mouth sores, and over the last 3 or 4 years my eyes have gotten incredibly dark and sunken.

I'm 33 now but when I was 16 I had intercourse with a girl i was later told was HIV possitive. unfortunately due to fear , shame , and a less then adequate education on the subject I did not get tested for almost 15 years. so now I have all these symptoms, i also resently developed a bunch of new freckles on my chest which I fear may be the start of Karposi Sarcoma.

so this is why I was trying to verify if it is possible that the cheek swab test would not detect HIV/AIDS in a person that has had it for so long and may have a weakened immune system that is not producing the antibodies it checks for. an I should instead go in some where for a diffrent type of more accurate hiv/aids test.

it is also very possible that through having this in the back of my head for so many years has lead to some anxiety disorders and some hypochondriac behaviors.

thank you again for your time.

Brief Answer:
It is better to get CD4 count viral load

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for reverting back to me.

In view of the additional information I think it is better to get tested further. I understand that these symptoms can be caused by anxiety and stress but considering the gravity of the condition I feel you should get tested for CD4 count and viral load- most specific indicator of HIV in body.

I must assure you that you will be find yourself negative despite all these tests but there is nothing wrong if it is done for piece of mind.

I hope this helps you further.
Thanks and regards.
