What Causes Cold Sensations Of Arms Inspite Of Having Peripheral Neuropathy?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Jun 2014
Question: For a year I have had cold sensations on my arms. It feels like cold cloths on a sunburn. Last year I was tested for thyroid, diabetes, and anemia. This year I returned with the same problem, but more occurences. In the meantime, I had tried getting info from Internet searches. Thyroid problems kept coming up with the searches. Some listed symptoms that I have included horizontal ridges on toenail, tiredness, and changes in hair texture. Other info: My mother had type II diabetes. I have Sjögren's syndrome, arthritis, peripheral neuropathy, depression, acid reflux, and possible XXXXXXX strokes. I am a 62 year-old women and work full time with long hours. I also don't get enough sleep except on. The weekend when I could sleep all the time. My doctor administered the same tests without no different results. While I am happy I don't have thyroid problems, it still disturbs me that I still have the chills. Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
kindly give me following details

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,
Welcome to healthcaremagic.
I have read your query and understood your concern.

Such cold senstions hands can be due to peripheral neuropathy which you already mentioned you have been suffering from.

Another important cause can be raynaud phenomenon which may be found in association with sjogren syndrome.
I will like to know the following details:
1 ) is there any change of color of fingers also on sunexposure?
2) any numbness or tingling sensation in hands?
3) any precipitating factor for cold sensation ?

Kindly get back to me with details of above questions so that I can help you to my best.
Stay healthy.

I am aware of raynaud's. I had thought this had more to do with cold exposure and finger changing color. However, I do not know about my fingers and sun exposure. I do not think there has been a change of color this summer. If there is, then what do I do?

I don't know of any precipitating factors. Are there specific factors you could tell me?

The only thing can think of was two years ago this July I was driving. My left arm was exposed to the sun through the car window. The drive was about three hours. That night my arm was extremely hot and itchy. Cold compresses did no good. The next day I bought a lotion the pharmacist suggested (Sarna) and that helped. I assumed my reaction might have been due to my Sjögren's.

There was tingling but not after I started on Gabapentin a few years ago. I have felt a little tingling recently. My doctor did check my feeling with her hands.

Thank you for your time. I apologize for delay in not responding earlier. I didn't see the notice of your reply.

Brief Answer:
peripheral neuropathy is the most lilely cause

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,
Welcome again.

Raynauds is characterized by discoloration of skin of fingers and toes on cold exposure.
Various precipitating factors are exposure to cold air, cold water or tobacco intake.
Color of fingers change from pale to blue then red.

if you dont find such symptoms, then tingling is likely due to the peripheral neuropathy which you already mentioned to me.

For that, I prefer to give my patients combination of gabapentin and vitamin B12. Else neurobion injections can be taken once a week along with gabpentin which you are already taking.
The dosage may need modification if tingling is not responding to the current dosage.

You may discuss this with your treating doctor. I am sure he/ she will agree with my opinion.
Stay healthy.
