What Causes Cold, Sore Throat And Raspy Voice?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Dec 2014
Question: For an ENT please.

Last week I started to come down with a cold, small sore throat and raspy voice. Then it turned into more of a nasty cold, I will timeline it below:

1. 10 days ago Throat started hurting then raspy voice.

2. 7 Days ago throat stopped hurting but then started getting very congested in my nose with a slight cough with raspy voice.

3. 5 Days ago Yellow/Green Mucus came out of the nose and at times some darker red blood came out with it as well. Slight cough has started too.

4. 3 Days ago I SEE an ENT still with the same symptoms on line 3. He wasn't too concerned about the blood but he did a NASAL ENDOSCOPY on my nasal passages and also cheeked my throat/larynx, etc. Didn't see anything concerning.

Now to fast forward just a little, the voice is back, I still have a slight cough and the nasal secretions are not showing yellow/green anymore BUT I am still seeing BLOOD if I were to use a NETTI POT or a steam shower to get my mucus flowing BLOOD will come out some.

I am not have a full out nosebleeds or anything and I seem to be feeling a lot better but the blood still has me concerned.

To my main question, if I were to have any type of cancer that is causing this type of blood would it be found by using the endoscope? I just want that part knocked off my list.

What is you opinion on what is going on? I am just little nervous because I don't really get like this and this one the first times I have experienced bleeding with mucus.
I assume the scope would see it but what also concerns me is SINUS CANCER it says you can have bleeding as well, so with a SCOPE I know you cant see all of your sinuses.. Only thing that I assuming is they add sinus and nasal cancer together and stating the nosebleed is because of a tumor in the nasal cavity area which would be seen by the scope? Am I correct on that, just little nervous.

Brief Answer:
acute sinusitis- no cancer.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.

As per your clinical details, it is an infection of sinuses. Acute sinusitis with bleeding from nose.

In case of sinus cancer, you get swelling, lymph node enlargement, facial pain and endoscopy shows fleshy fragile mass ( your endoscopy-normal).

I do agree, in diagnostic nasal endoscopy, endoscope will not enter the sinuses, but it visualizes the sinus openings ( in cancer-sinus opening closes and blood tinges). As such, in cancer of sino-nasal cavity, XXXXXXX blood gushes. and there will not be any mucus.

Do not worry, it is not a cancer. Have a faith on your treating doctor (no findings in nasal endoscopy).

Bleeding though nose is common in healing phase of sinusitis, due to drying of crusts. I assume, you have already on decongestant nasal drops and antibiotics.

For loosening of crusts, do steam inhalation, stop smoking (if you are smoking).

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

All the best.

Thanks for your response. I did not take the antibiotics because I have a lot of stomach issues with them, the DR told me as long as it clears up I wont need them. He did mention taking an OTC like Nasocort do you recommend that or will that cause more bleeding?

I do not Smoke, I do come across second hand smoke from time to time.

To clarify about the different cancers:

SINUS Cancer shows up as swelling and pain I would assume from the sinus filling up it doesn't show up as mucus with blood?? Also and endoscope would have showed anything that would be bleeding if it where from the SINUS?

NASAL Cancer normally shows up as a blockage or obstruction with XXXXXXX BLOOD coming out and of course that would be seen with a nasal endoscope.

My only really symptom now is blood tinged clear mucus after clearing my nasal passages I just wanted to be clear and make sure im doing the right things. I know im probably jumping the wrong thing here but that is what concerns me the most. Thanks

Brief Answer:
start an antibiotic course.

Detailed Answer:

Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

In my opinion, you need to correct your stomach problem and should continue antibiotic course.

In case of sinusitis, with out proper combination(antibiotics, decongestants and anti inflammatory), there is a chance of infection may extends to ear, throat or brain.

Nasocort is a steroidal spray, best works for allergy, will not work for active infection (mucus with bleeding). Repeated clearing of nose can cause bleeding ( please stop).

I suggest you to start the antibiotics (as per your treating doctor). With persistent bleed with sinus infection you may require CT scan of para nasal sinuses to rule out any anatomical abnormalities (deviated septum ,spur) or disorders (chronic sinusitis, allergic polyp).

Do not worry, it is not a cancer, follow the instructions of your treating doctor.

Hope, I have answered your query.

Take care.

Thanks for your time and information.

You stated stop clearing my nose do you mean to stop using a Neti pot to clean the sinus until the problem has subsided?

Thanks!

Brief Answer:
stop neti pot.

Detailed Answer:

Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

Yes. You need to stop neti pot clearing in presence of blood. Water force can injure the nasal vasculature, where bleeding does not stops.

Take care.
