What Causes Conjugate Eye Deviation With Stuttering Of Words In A Child?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Mar 2017
Question: My 2 and a half year old son had tubes out in his ears and his adenoids removed Wed. I noticed the last 2 days sometimes he squints his eyes really hard and acts like he is struggling to get words out. And he repeats the word like a stutter at first. He did this 3 times in a 20 minute period and is doing it off and on. Otherwise he is active anr fine besides being lethargic some from surgery. Is this normal? It seems neurological

Brief Answer:
Make a video and discuss with your doctor, it can be seizure

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for choosing this platform

Deviation of eyes to one corner(medically known as conjugate Deviation of eyes) with stuttering of words with or without altered sensorium can be seizure.
As already there is history of ear tube(ear infection is high risk of seizure), I request you to observe the child closely and better make a video of the abnormal activity.
Show this video to your physician and discuss as this may be seizure. Other better way is continuous video EEG monitoring (to see the electrical activity of seizure in brain) if this facility is available in the hospital.

I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more query.

Could this be a result of surgery 4 days ago? He is only squinting his eyes when he is trying to get the word out. They are not going to the side.

Brief Answer:
Difficult to comment whether it is due to surgery

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I won't get overly worried as the symptom is not persistent and otherwise child is doing well.

First of all, it has to be assessed that which kind of movement this is. Whether it is a seizure movement or some transient abnormal movement due to discomfort of surgery.

As already it's postoperative 4th day and the symptom is getting repeated again I would request you to make a video clip of the episode and discuss it with your physician.

Regards
