What Causes Constant Calf And Leg Muscle Pain?

Question : Hello Doctor, XXXXXXX is having constant pain below the knees ,also above the ankles in both of his legs. His vitamin D3 levels are low., around 14[ normal should be 30] He is slightly overweight too. He is around 90kgs, height 5'11 inch.Can this be the cause of the pain? He had ACL reconstruction done about 3 years back in his left knee. Can you tell what can be done for this pain? What can be the probable cause?

Brief Answer: Vit D deficiency seems probable cause of the pain. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for your query. In the absence of any history of wear & tear or injury, constant calf and leg muscle pain can be due to: 1. Deficiency of certain nutrients like Iron, Vitamin B 12, Vitamin D, Calcium, etc. which interferes with blood formation & nerve conduction. 2. Decrease in blood sugar levels (Hypoglycemia) 3. Any fluctuation in blood pressure levels such as Hypotension. 4. Hormonal imbalance like Hypothyroidism. 5. Lack of adequate hydration, proper nutrition & good sleep. 6. Even emotional factors like stress/tension can lead to such symptoms. Investigations like complete estimation of blood pressure and blood sugar levels will be helpful in clinching the diagnosis. In his case vit D deficiency seems to be most probable cause of the pain. For this he have to take vit D supplements under supervision of his doctor. Taking daily sunlight exposure is also important. He can take Tablet Motrin 1 tablet with food as and when required (upto 4 tablets daily) for pain. Eat a diet rich in fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables, nuts, milk, eggs, pulses and cereals. Drink 1-2 litres of water daily. Do brisk walking exercise for 40 minutes daily. Get 6-8 hours of refreshing sleep daily.
