What Causes Constant Diarrhea Post Gall Bladder Removal?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Feb 2015
Question: I have had diarrhea for the most part since I had my Gallbladder out. Every once on a while I see spots of blood on tissue after wiping. This morning though, I had a more solid bowel movement and there was bright red blood in the stool. Do I need to be concerned? I have some pain in my stomach, but tested and nothing came of it. I have also had pain in my back by my kidneys for a couple of months.

Brief Answer:
Should be concerned.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history, Medical History, Current medications. Read in detail.

Your gall bladder was removed 7 months ago, and you have diarrhea since then.
There is also a history of spots of blood in tissue after wiping. But this morning you had a more solid bowel movement and there was bright red blood in the stool, also have some pain in the stomach. Also have had pain in the back by kidneys for couple of months .

I think you should be concerned a bit.
I would advise you the following:
Get a consultation of a Gastroenterologist as you have long standing diarrhea.
Get colonoscopy done - ano-proctoscopy will be part of it, to decide the cause of blood in stool.
Once the diagnosis is done it is easy to treat the cause and get well.
What were the tests done for pain in stomach ?
Till then add probiotics and have a 5 day course of an antibiotic and metronidazole.

The cause of the pain in the back by kidneys for couple of months can be due to muscle spasm not getting rest.

They did a scope and found mucus in the stomach lining, but were not concerned. Could the blood just be caused from hemorrhoids? I had a colonoscopy done 5 years ago and everything was fine. No polyps or anything.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to hemorrhoids

Detailed Answer:
Yes, the cause can most probably be due to Hemorrhoids as there is no history of painful defecation (pain is more suggestive of fissure).

But colonoscopy 5 years has no significance now as it is a long time.
Upper GI Endoscopy looks to be normal- (only mucus in stomach lining)

I will get a colonoscopy scheduled. Is there anything I can try not to alleviate the discomfort? I should also mention that this mornings bowl movement was very foul smelling. Nothing I had experienced before, which is why I figured it was hopefully a one time thing. What could have caused that?

Brief Answer:
intestinal infection

Detailed Answer:
Great to know your decision to go for colonoscopy.

As said earlier, a course of an antibiotic, metronidazole for 5 days and probiotic for a long time (just to restore GI flora).

Foul smelling bm is suggestive of an intestinal infection. It is difficult to say what caused this as we eat and drink different things daily. Get a course of medicines, please.
