What Causes Constant Dizziness Post Recovery From Vertigo?

default
Posted on Mon, 25 Apr 2016
Question: Good Morning. I have been experiencing constant dizziness for the past 4 months. Initially I was treated for benign vertigo - given eply and semont manuever pamphlets, but no improvement. Cat scans and ENTexams have come back negative. I did have PRK surgery late May of 2015, then September an onslaught of dizziness came on. I have been living with it, going to work, even working out, but i am almost always in a constant state of dizziness and my balance is affected fairly moderately. I am currently taking a low dose of atenolol for the past 2 years. Wondering if there is anything I have overlooked, or do I have to continue to wait it out? Dizziness is driving me crazy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

I carefully read your question and understand your concern.

Your symptoms don't seem to be related to the PRK surgery.

From the other hand the ENT exams have excluded any possible inner ear problem.

Have you taken any antihistamines? You should know, that even when ENT tests result normal, antihistamines used for Vertigo can be helpful.

I would recommend starting cinnarizine or betahistine for this symptomatology. Other treatment options would be Meclizine and dimenhydrate.

From the other hand, I would also recommend perming a brain MRI and an EEG to exclude other possible causes (like partial seizures with vertigo, or possible lesion to the vestibular nerve).

Atenolol can sometimes cause or aggravate vertigo. I would recommend discussing with your attending physician the possibility to switch into another treatment option like a calcium channel blocker, etc. to exclude this possibility.

Meanwhile, I would recommend you to closely monitor your blood pressure in sitting or standing up position. Low blood pressure or orthostatic hypotension could be another cause of vertigo and dizziness.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
