What Causes Constant Fever, Rapid Heart Beat, High Pulse Rate And Shoulder Pain?

default
Posted on Sat, 18 Jun 2016
Question: my 17 year old daughter has has a slightly elevated temperature for a couple of days (100.2) and keeps complaining that her heart is pounding. I have taken her pulse and it's between 80 and 90. She is also having pain in the top of her shoulders next to the neck (tight muscle pain) that is relieved with hot compresses. Is the heart rate normal during some viruses?

by the way she does not drink caffeine, does not do recreational drugs, etc. She's having flushes of heat along with this, but the pounding is all the time

Brief Answer:
the heart rate may be normal or increased with infection, it can vary

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The normal pulse rate is between 60 to 100. Infections, including viral infections, can be associated with a normal or increased heart rate.
It can vary, depends on the severity of condition, medication used for treatment and complications. The illness itself or a fever, if present, can cause a change in pulse rate.

If her pulse is normally lower than these values of 80 to 90, then the increase to these values may feel abnormal to her, hence the feeling as though the heart rate or heart rhythm are abnormal though it is in normal range.

Changes in pulse rate and viral infections can causes flushing as well.
Viral infection can be associated with muscle or joint pain.

Her heart rate should return to her normal values once the infection has resolved.
