What Causes Constant Hand Pain?

default
Posted on Thu, 15 May 2014
Question: hi, i am worried there is something wrong with my left hand. it hurts, but not a constant pain. for example, if i hold a water bottle in my left hand (the hurt one) and i try to open the cap with my right hand, which makes my left hand turn slightly, there is a sharp pain, it actually hurts bad. or if i pull a chair out with my left hand its the same sharp pain, but if i put pressure against it, for example pushing in a chair it does not hurt. I have never injured this hand before, but i use it alot with my sport. im a cheerleader and i am a base which is the person under neath the stunt, but i have no had an direct injury with my hand. what do you think it may be?

Brief Answer:
It can be a teno synovitis

Detailed Answer:
hello mam,
I have seen cheerleaders and I agree that your work demands absolute fitness. I have read your question, and it looks to me that you are having inflammation of tendon sheaths most probably of thumb.. It is also called as Dequervain's teno synovitis. In this disease there is pain on movements specially which you have described.
Other possibilities of pain in hand are wrist synovitis and carpel tunnel. But these two conditions are painful during rest also . So I think this is not there in your case. For confirmation you need to see an orthopaedic doctor. He can examine you and confirm it. I do not think x ray will be needed.
Treatment is analgesics, splinting and steroid injection at tendon sheath.
l hope this answers your query. Let me know if you want to ask any thing else. Thanks and take care.

thank you very much for getting back to me! you dont think its as simple as maybe a stress fracture? i read that it occurs more often with females who dont regularly get their period, which i dont. im not sure if you would know about this either. i had to go on a pill to get my period and i only get it if im on birth control, i stopped taking birth control because it made me gain alittle bit of weight and i havent gotten my period since. its been a few months and im not sure why im not getting it. do you know what this could be?

Brief Answer:
I do not think that it can be a stress fracture

Detailed Answer:
hello madam,
From your complains , I do not think that it can be a stress fracture. As stress fracture is more common in legs. It is seen in foot mostly. I have never seen a stress fracture in hand. Also stress fracture causes constant pain. If you are worried about it then get a x ray to confirm the diagnosis.
if it turns out to be stress fracture on x ray then treatment is rest and calcium. I also want to tell you that stress fracture and periods have no relation whatsoever . I would suggest you to see a gynaecologist for irregular periods as this is not my speciality. So I would not ne able to tell you the cause of irregular periods in you.
let me know if I missed some thing, It will be my pleasure to help you. Thanks and take care.
