What Causes Constant Movement Of Hands And Tapping Of Fingers?

Posted on Sat, 4 Oct 2014
Question: My 10 year old grandson had about 5 BREC incidents. He is constantly moving his hands with quick movement and tapping his fingers together. His Doctor said this is o.k. not to worry, but it's constant and he is not aware until we tell him to stop........Is this an identifier of BREC or could the be another unidentified problem?

Brief Answer:
No need to worry about these.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your grandson's symptoms and investigation reports.

I agree with his doctor's view that there is no need to worry about his constant hand movements and they do not suggest another problem. Also, they are not related to BREC.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Even though all the test show normal....Do these symptoms sound like BREC or ___what___ to you?

Since he has another partial type seizure last night, is there another test we should request?

This is really scary when it happens, can these type seizures cause damage?

Would you recommend he take some type ___?____ of medication to prevent these episodes?

Brief Answer:
Symptoms sound like BREC

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

Yes, the symptoms are suggestive of BREC.

All tests may be normal in several cases of BREC. An overnight EEG may be done to look for abnormal discharges.

BREC is a benign condition and does not produce any brain damage. No medications are necessary at present.

Best wishes,
Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology)
