Question : I am 3 weeks s/p a partial colectomy. I continue to have daily nausea. I do take zofran as needed which does not always give me relief. I feel quite sick with the nausea - so much so that I'm going to ask my surgeon for an extra 2 weeks out of work.

I'm hoping that this nausea will eventually go away. I'm only eating yogurt pudding and scrambled eggs

Thanks

Brief Answer:
There should be no nausea after such surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Nausea is not a common symptom after a partial colectomy. Actually if the surgery is done right you should rather have a normal appetite and no nausea. Diarrhea is what can appear, but not nausea.
We have nausea if for some reason the food does not pass freely through the intestinal junction. We call it partial bowels obstruction. If you have also occasional cramps, bloating and you can hardly pas any gas, obstruction is possible.
Zofran is not the best choice to prevent nausea. Zofran works greatly after chemotherapy. But it can be ineffective in case of surgery.
I suggest you to try Thiethylperazinum instead. If you have been taking an antibiotic during and after the surgery, you should also start probiotic intake.

But once again, nausea is not a normal symptom after such surgery.

Hope this helps.
Regards.

I just had a CT scan on Monday - everything was normal!

I just put a call to my surgeon. I don't know what else to do? I'm very scared!

Brief Answer:
If CT is fine, no need to be worried.

Detailed Answer:
Do not be scared. If CT is fine, than there is no obstruction. Just consider changing anti vomiting drug and start probiotic intake (very important). And give it some time. You may also try ginger as an addition to the treatment.
If no improvement in a week or so, some more tests should be done including gastroscopy and colonoscopy.
