default
Posted on Mon, 24 Nov 2014
Question: hi. I have been having a constant pain behind my right breast. also, seems like muscle pains on my sides and upper back. Can this be related to my spine? I do have degenerative disc disease of my lower back and I am almost osteoporosis. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Can be due to osteoporosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain behind the breast and on both the sides is more likely to be a muscular pain. If there is no pain in the back then degenerative disc is less likely. These pains can be related to low calcium and vitamin D3 levels also. You can take a mild pain killer and start with calcium and D3 supplements after getting the levels checked.
Doing a hot fomentation in the area will also help.
I hope this answers your query.

thanks. I did have endoscopy done and had mild esophagitis and mild gastritis. i was on omeprazole 40mg and ranitidine 300mg. The pain behind my breast did not go away. i went for 2nd opinion and he said that where my pain was it wasnt caused by esophagitis as the pain was not in my breastbone. I do have upper and mid back pain. gallbladder ok. I am thinking it is my muscles too but dont k now how i would find out. it has been going on for a few months now. I had a spine and neck mri taken a couple of days ago. Wont find out about that for a couple of weeks. Would that show muscles? thanks again

Brief Answer:
Muscle pain is not detected in MRI scan.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
MRI scan will not detect a pathology due to muscle spasm. If this pain is not spine related then it should be relieved with proper calcium and Vitamin D3 supplements with muscle relaxants and hot fomentation.
Hope my answer is helpful.

thanks. I have been taking calcium 500 and vit d3 1000. is that enough? is there a test to see is it is muscle related? i will start with the moist heat too. also, the the pain behind my right breast can that be associated with the upper and mid back pain? thanks again

Brief Answer:
Higher doses of Vit D3 are needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Vitamin D3 dose is slightly less. At least 2000IU daily supplementation is needed. You can get your serum Vitamin D3 levels estimated and get your doses adjusted.
There is no specific test to find out that the pain you have is muscle related. The pain behind right breast is not likely to be related to pain in upper back. It can be due to chest related causes or costochondritis.
Regards.
