What Causes Constantly Blinking And Flicking Of Eyes?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Jun 2014
Question: Hi Dr. My 10 year son has been having some visual disturbance for the last six months which appears to be worsening. We noticed as he was constantly blinking and flicking his eyes around the room. We put this down to his ADD as he is quite fidgety. He says that he sees after images of everything he looks at. He says it is not just a shadow but colourful, so when he looks away from an object he sees it again for a few seconds. He's finding it very annoying and distracting. He has been on Ritalin medication for 12 months. My concern is the possibility of something seizure related as I (his mother) was diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy 2 years ago, and many of my seizure symptoms are visual. Do you think he should see a neurologist to check this out? Could the disturbance be due to Ritalin? We can't get into his paediatrician for 3 months. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Could be seizure

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to health care magic.
The visual symptoms you described could be indicative of seizure .
It is unlikely to be due to Ritalin.
You need to consult a neurologist and opthalmologist to rule out eye and brain issues.
EEG might reveal if the symptoms are correlating with electrical activity.

Wishing speedy recovery.

Dr Arun
