What Causes Constipation, Extreme Fatigue, Dry Hair And Extremely Dry Skin?

Posted on Thu, 23 Apr 2015
Question: I am on the border of hypothyroid, and my doc keeps putting me off on starting me on synthroid. Every 6 months he tells me to wait 6 more months. However, being a post menopausal woman with borderline lab values I know I would rather be treated because I'm symptomatic. My symptoms include constipation, extreme fatigue, dry (to the point of brittle) hair, extremely dry skin, I'm always cold (especially my hands and feet), my once very stable weight is going up (despite extremely careful diet and exercise), irritability, and muscle aches. I was also warned by my oncologist 20 years ago that this would happen. I have also been a nursing professional for nearly 20 years, and know I'll feel better with treatment. I just want the symptoms treated, but live over 100 miles from the next town.

Brief Answer:
You can consult another Endocrinologist

Detailed Answer:
Hello

My name is Dr Muhammad Ali Rauf & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way. Your symptoms are prominent and at this moment it would be better to start medication. If you think that particular doctor is keeping you on hold then you can take second opinion from another Endocrinologist. Have you undergone "Thyroid Profile"? If labs confirm hypothyroidism then there is no point in not starting the medication. Yes, as soon as medication is started then you will automatically see improvement in your symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!

Part of the problem is that an endocrinologist is over 100 miles away and in another state, so my insurance doesn't cover there. My labs show me on the very low end of normal, so my doc won't start me on meds. However, the research I've done says its not uncommon for post menopausal women to be low normal and have symptoms, and that there is much debate on treating the low normal. My last lab was 0.6 so I know where I'm at, I just need treatment, and can't get it here. Are there telemed docs that can treat me? Because that may be my only option.

Brief Answer:
Please share your location ; i'll try to search concerned doctor for you

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Your doctor is awaiting most probably because of borderline values. Due to some rules & regulations i or any doctor available online will not be able to give prescription online BUT if you can share your current location then i can search some concerned doctor whom you can contact and discuss the issue to get prescription.

Thank You & Wishing you good health !!
