Question: Every night my husband experiences dreams from the time he goes to sleep until morning. He talks in his sleep, wakes up frequently. Many dreams are frightening. He has severe emphysema. Uses inhalers and guaifenesin. Is there anything he can do to make sleep more peaceful with or without medication?

Brief Answer:
yes he can use non pharmacological and pharmacological methods

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

His sleep problem can also be due to emphysema so treatment for his breathlessness is must.

For good sleep:
I would recommend following 'sleep hygiene'.
These are some measures called which would help in sleep. You can find the same in below link.

Drinking a cup of warm milk before going to bed helps in 30-40% of patients and they do not need medicines as per my clinical experience.

In medicines I would recommend melatonin, ambien (zolpidem) and ativan as they cause very less effect of respiration which should be second line of treatment if he cannot sleep with above measures.

I recommend melatonin. It is a natural hormone and available as herbal supplement. 5 mg 3-4 hours before sleep or you can use controlled release preparation.

Ambien and ativan are prescription drugs and you should consult the doctor for prescription to take either of any one if melatonin cannot help.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further after your response.
Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
