Question: I have had a productive cough for over a week but woke up today with pain in my left side jaw, cheek bone area and my eye. I propped myself up with extra pillows which eased the pain somewhat. I don't know if I should go to work as it is 50 miles away so my day is about 13 hours long with the commute and 10 hour shift.

Brief Answer:
May need to try and rest and recover somewhat today.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

The pain in the left jaw, cheek and eye with a history a history of productive cough is likely related to congestion of the sinuses. This is the reason the vicks, which helps to open the sinuses and nasal passages.
Propping up also helps to improve drainage.

The pain from sinus congestion can be severe in some cases and if this is the case for you then it may be best for you to rest and try and recover somewhat today.

Most over the counter cough and colds meds contain a decongestant eg pseudoephedrine or phenyephrine. You can check to see if the medication you are using contains one of these.

If continue it, if not you need to get a cough/cold med with a decongestant.

Add a topical decongestant like otrivine or normal saline.
In addition, a warm (not hot) compress to the face, would also be helpful to encourage drainage.

You can take a pain medication if the pain is severe.

I hope this helps.
