What Causes Coughing Up Of Red Blood?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Feb 2017
Question: When I threw up just now, bright red blood came spewing out. I believe I ruptured a blood vessel in my throat. How long will it heal? Do you recommend me going to emergency room? Is it something minor or do you think I will need blood transfusion?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,thank you for posting you query on health care magic.

There can be two possibilities of blood coming from mouth:

1.)Vomiting of blood
Bleeding from mouth may be caused by minor conditions such as:esophagus(food pipe)irritation, nosebleeds, injury in the mouth, tear in the esophagus due to chronic coughing or vomiting, etc
Other common causes of vomiting blood include:stomach ulcers, aspirin side effects, gastritis, or stomach inflammation,non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug side effects, etc.
More serious causes of vomiting blood include:Hepatitis(inflammation in the liver,Pancreatitis(inflammation in the pancreas,Esphageal cancer, etc.

It would be advisable to consult an Emergency doctor if you experience any of these symptoms:another episode of bleeding from mouth, dizziness, blurred vision, rapid heartbeat, changes in breathing, cold skin, clammy skin, confusion, fainting, severe abdominal pain, etc.

Otherwise, you may consult a Physician doctor the next day.If required Upper gastro-intestinal endoscopy may be needed to find out the cause by a Gastro-enterologist doctor.

2.)Blood coming with sputum

Common causes of blood-tinged sputum include:prolonged severe coughing, bronchitis, nosebleeds, laryngitis(inflammation of the voice box),other chest infections.
More serious causes of blood-tinged sputum can include:lung cancer or throat cancer, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, or a blood clot in the lung, fluid in the lungs, breathing foreign material into the lung, certain infections, such as tuberculosis, taking anticoagulants, which thin blood to prevent it from clotting, etc.

It would be advisable to consult an emergency doctor if you cough up more than a few teaspoons of blood, you also have chest pain, dizziness, fever, light-headedness or worsening shortness of breath, you have a loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss .

Otherwise, you may consult a Physician doctor the next day.He/she may do examination of your nose aand throat, and auscultation of lungs.Chest X ray, blood coagulation test and Bronchoscopy may be needed to find out the cause and treat accordingly.

Blood transfusion is needed if you have vomited or coughed a large amount of blood(more than around 100 ml) and if your hemoglobin is less than around 8 mg/dl.

At present, you don’t get frightened.Don’t cough or blow your nose or vomit forcefully.Drink lots of water.Avoid taking hot meals.

Hoe this answers your question.I would be happy to answer if you have any follow-up question.Take care.
