Question: Is it normal for a 5 month old's spine to look crooked when sitting them up? Does not sit up or unassisted yet - but noticed when sitting on my lap the spine looks curved to the left towards the lower/middle of the back?

Brief Answer:
Yes it is normal
Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing to us.
It is absolutely normal for a 5 month old baby s spine to look bent while sitting on the lap.
Spine stability is not attained at this age.
It's better to avoid sitting your baby frequently. Always support the back while sitting or holding.
Don't make the baby sit for longer. Ensure you put the baby on a flat firm bed to sleep.
Avoid soft beds as they don't support spine well.
By 8 to 9 months spine stability will improve and baby can be made to sit with support and later without support.
If the bending persists beyond 10 months consult your doctor to rule out scoliosis.

Wishing your baby good health.
Regards Dr Arun
