What Causes Dark Blue Veins On Left Side Of Neck?

default
Posted on Wed, 6 May 2015
Question: Ive had for past 10 days suddenly very dark blue veins on left side of neck and chest that feel tight and a burning sensation up that vein to my ear at times, also pain in my shoulder and down my arms at times. I was recently checked with normal blood pressure- 120/73. I do not have any fever or other symptoms but the neck vein sensations worry me, is it just a varicose vein or more serious?

There is no pain from touching the veins, there are some family members with diabetes and have been told I have a minor heart murmur in past. When I went to the emergency room with similar pain in my arms only, in the armpit area and down my arms, I was told my heart was fine and blood oxygenation was 95%, the pain goes up to my ear on the left side but is not severe. I believe I may have sjogrens syndrome based on extremely dry eyes and mouth since the onset of the first bout of symptoms several months ago. eventually after 2 months the pains went away but the extremely dry eyes and mouth persisted the whole time, as well as occasional numbness/tingling in the 2 outer toes of my right foot- last time my right leg was affected with pains as well. No visual problems. Im not on any medications except taking advil/naproxen for this pain at dosage on bottle. Taking horse chestnut pills seems to make the veins less prominent for several hours and feel somewhat better. Three weeks ago I had a tooth extraction on the right lower jaw that is no longer painful but still looks like its healing and also a very minor sprain to my right ankle about a week before the symptoms started. I suspect some autoimmune problem but have not been able to see a doctor ( I have only emergency room or 2 month wait available at the present)

Brief Answer:
needs further workup undersupervision of a vascular surgeon

Detailed Answer:
hello

thank you for the answers. I have gone through them. There could be a number of causes for your complaint. They include heart problem, autoimmune vasculitis, muscular spasm. Varicose veins are uncommon at this location. If i were your treating doctor then i would have advised following things:

- Naproxen thrice a day for 5 days.
- visit hospital and get a baseline ECG done.
- Ultrasound of vessel to check status of vessel.
- ANA levels

An appointment with a vascular surgeon would be of great assistance in this case. He is specialized in dealing with arteries/veins pathgologies. If necessary he might also suggest biopsy of vessel. Further treatment plan would depend upon the lab results.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!
