What Causes Decrease In Muscle Mass In An Elderly Person While On Lipitor?

Posted on Tue, 16 Feb 2016
Question: I am 65 years of age and have lost muscle mass in my legs from Lipitor. I worked out 3-4 times a week before a few medical problems developed with my husband, and I stopped. I am in desperate need to rebuild my legs or will, no doubt end up in a wheelchair within a few years. I belong to a fitness club but am considering Yoga. In your opinion, what be be the best course of action to rebuild muscle strength. I am otherwise healthy--scoliosis & three fusions in my spine causing periods of much pain. Help

Brief Answer:
Just get an evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.
Statins (Lipitor) induced myopathy is commonly transient side effect of statins and has to be proved with raised CPK levels.
I am mentioning all this because you need to be sure that it's statin induced and nothing else. There are other forms of myopathies too and needs consideration if the myopathy has become permanent or not improving even after discontinuation of Statins.
So, I would need to know:
1.How much dose of Lipitor you were on ?
2. Were your CPK levels , Electromyography performed?
3. Did your myopathy improved on stopping statins?
See, I would like to be sure of the diagnosis as there are no special medicines to built muscle mass.
We would discuss All possible options based on the diagnosis.
Revert with the asked details for a better help.
