What Causes Delay In Menstruation Post Child Birth?

default
Posted on Sat, 23 Jul 2016
Question: I'm 28 years old. My baby was born in September 2015 and it was caesarian . I don't have a mensuration yet. Is this normal? I had a mensuration kind of thing in January, but doctor said that its not mensuration. I'm breastfeeding.
How long the mensuration can be delayed after delivery.
I already asked the question here in this forum and doctor asked me to check the thyroid levels and I have done the tests last week. it's all normal only.

Brief Answer:
Rule out pregnancy, progesterone withdrawal, lifestyle changes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Dr. Purushottam welcomes you to HCM virtual clinic!
Thanks for consulting at HCM. I have carefully gone through your query, and I think I have understood your concern. I will try to address your medical concerns and would suggest you the best of the available treatment options.

1) First of all do not panic.
I just want to know , if there was excessive bleeding after delivery of baby? If not you need not worry.

2) As a Gynecologist I will suggest you to get morning's urine tested for pregnancy. If you have slightest doubt or history of unprotected sex , then we need to rule out pregnancy as a cause of absent menses. In case of doubt blood beta HCG test and USG will be helpful.

3) If pregnancy is not the cause of absent menses, then it can be due to prolonged and frequent breastfeeding. Hormone responsible for milk formation can lead to absent menses. (LACTATIONAL AMENORRHOEA). In this case you can simply wait for onset of menses or induce the periods with progesterone group of medicines , twice a day for 5 days;which you can get with a prescription of your physician.

3) As far as your liver condition is concerned ; then -
I will suggest indulging in a healthy diet and regular exercise regime.
Include plenty of fruits, salads, vegetables in the diet.Have adequate water intake , say 8 – 10 glasses per day. Avoid deep fried foods, bakery products, and refined sugars.Start on FOLIC ACID, B12, Iron and Calcium and Vitamin D supplements.

I hope my answer helps you.
Thanks.
Wish you great health.

Brief Answer:
If no chance of pregnancy, simply wait or you can induce the periods.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for appreciating the answer and reverting back.

It is good to hear that you are improving on liver issue. Keep in touch with your treating doctor about the same.

Now, let's consider your gynec issues.

I am sure that you must have confirmed that there is no chance of pregnancy as a cause of your absent periods.

In this case please do not worry. This can be due to breastfeeding. In many women levels of prolactin hormone, which is responsible for milk production are responsible for supressing ovarian function and can cause absence of menses. In such situation you can simply wait for the onset of periods.

If you want to induce periods , I will suggest to please get a prescription for Tablet Norethisterone which can be taken two times a day for 5 days, But these medications are available with doctor;s prescription. Usually periods start within 3 to 10 days of finishing the tablets.

Meanwhile, please observe safe and protected sex activity, to avoid chance of getting pregnant. In your situation use of barrier method like Condom is advisable.

I hope this answer helps you.

Thanks.
