Brief Answer:
Mild hormonal imbalance can cause this.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Please let me know a few more details.
What is your age ?
Are your cycles always regular ?
Did you ever have such an issue in the past.
Sometimes mild hormonal imbalance can cause such irregular spotting.
It can be triggered by - stress, anxiety, emotional turbulence, weight changes, unaccustomed exercise, smoking, drinking, travelling etc.
Once in a while you can ignore it.
If it persists however, then you should have a gynecological evaluation.
That would include an internal exam, Pap smear, pelvic ultrasound scan and hormonal evaluation - FSH, LH, TSH, Prolactin.
All the best
Please feel free to discuss further.

Hi there,
I am 21 years old, and have just started being sexually active two months ago.
I usually do not keep track of my period, but after I was sexually active my period was one week late than the previous month, but this month, it is even later.
I have just tested on pregnancy test as well, and its negative.
I am just paranoid about pregnancy, but I do not think I am, as my partner always puts protection midway, and has a very good control.

Have been a little stress out lately, but nothing else.
Do you think the spotting is pregnancy symptoms or just hormonal imbalance?

Brief Answer:
I dont think its pregnancy.

Detailed Answer:
Since the pregnancy test is negative, I do not thing pregnancy is likely.
I feel it is just stress.
However, putting on a condom midway is very risky, as pre ejaculate can lead to pregnancy.
If you are sexually active, birth control or consistent protection is essential.
Take care.

Hi, Thank you for your reply.

How long can this brown bloody discharge continue to happen until its not normal? how many days is considered normal?
And I have been experiencing bloating, since yesterday, my stomach feels very full.
Is this also normal due to stress?

I have been prescribed contraceptive pills, been waiting for my period but it is just not here yet.

I havent gone on the pills yet, but was prescribed 3 wks ago, thinking that i can start on first day of period. But my period is really late this month.

Since yesterday ive been noticing more bloody discharge, this time not just sporting but more like menstruation. However its so much lighter than my usual period. Usually the blood will flow out n fill up the pad, but this time ive been noticing more blood whenever i wipe, instead of it filling the pad.

I did not have enough sleep last night, and did not eat proper lunch today, only coffee and a donut. At 3 pm, after someone smoked a lot and sat next to me for hours, i had bad headaches( which always happens) but this time i also feel nauseous, and vomitted twice, wasnt much, the third time was just air.

After dinner i feel very bloated and gassy. My tummy feels so full. And I kept burping and gagging air. I am very confused if this is just the cause of menstruation and bloating or something else?

I want to start on my pills, but i just want to be sure if this is a normal menstruation. I tested again this afternoon and it was still negative. Can i trust the test? Or should I be concerned?
Sorry for the overwhelming information. I just want to be very sure. Thank you!

Brief Answer:
You could get the workup done before starting the pills.

Detailed Answer:
Hi there !
IT is not overwhelming information, it is just being detailed about your condition, and I appreciate the intelligent and indepth information.
Thank you for that.
I do not think pregnancy is a possibility.
BUt since you plan to go on your pills, you have to be sure this is a normal period.
At times, some other conditions such as a cervical / endometrial polyp, cervical lesion, infection, thyroid hormone issues can cause this.
I think it is worthwhile to get the workup I outlined earlier before starting the pills.
Please get that done.
Atleast an internal exam, Pap smear and pelvic ultrasound scan.

Thanks for your reply, the bleeding has gotten much heavier like a period now. So i am very relieved.
However, im noticing something different. I have been spotting since thursday to saturday, sunday- today it gets heavier. Usually period goes 2-3rd day heavier And then lighter. Why is mine longer than a week and gets heavier and heavier?
Is that normal?

Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Have tried to explain

Detailed Answer:
See basically a late period in itself is not very normal, right ?
But considering that you have had a late period this time, the pattern of bleeding is normal ( for a late period ) if you can understand what I am trying to say !
During a menstrual period, the lining of the uterus gets shed, that is what causes bleeding.
When a period gets delayed for some reason, the lining of the uterus keeps getting thickened ( it keeps getting built up without being shed off ).
Hence, when you start a period finally, initially the lining starts getting shed off in bits and pieces leading to spotting, and then you finally see a heavier period, as the bulk of the uterine lining sheds off.
This ' period ' is naturally heavier than usual because the amount of lining that has to be shed off, is more.
I hope this clarifies things.
One more thing, if this pattern persists over the next couple of cycles, then please have the evaluation as suggested.
There is a condition called - endometrial hyperplasia.
Due to hormonal imbalances, the lining gets thickened and gets shed off irregularly each month.
If this is diagnosed, it is easily treated with 3 - 6 months of cyclical hormone therapy to regulate cycles.
Hope this information helped you.
Take care.
