Question : I had a tubal ligation in Oct 2009 and have had regular cycles until now. I was 2 weeks late and my cycle was very short for me and light what could cause this

An occasional delayed and light period is acceptable as normal. Stress ( both physical and mental) sudden weight change can also cause irregular periods.

But there is also a very slim possibility of pregnancy in your case due to tubal ligation method failure. So Get a pregnancy test done. I expect it to be negative.
If irregularity in your period cycle persists then you need to consult Gynecologist . (You will need to do thyroid, prolactin test, Pelvic ultrasound for possibility of ovarian cyst)
Since physical and emotional stress can cause delay in periods, stop worrying. let us follow and see when you get your next period.
