What Causes Delayed Periods?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Oct 2014
Question: Hello Doctor ,
I have a situation here.On Oct 2, 2014 me and my girlfriend had unprotected sex as things got a little intense. On the very day (Oct 02-2014) her periods were about to start as she said according to the calculations. It was supposed to start on Oct 2 only and just before starting we had sex to be more clear. Now its been 12th of Oct and she is still waiting for her periods to start . We are very anxious and tensed due to the irregular delay of 10 days.

Points to be noted.
1) I didn't cum inside her that I am sure of. I cummed after sex in the washroom . Also just after sex there wasn't even pre-cum (semen) on my penis.
2) The delay of periods is irregular for her , however, she mentioned once long back it was delayed by a week or so.
3) She is not under any meds and also she had a bit cold for 2 days due to weather change in XXXXXXX
Kindly HELP me !
1)Is this delay normal ?
2) What are the chances of getting pregnant ? We are just 19 years old and cannot even think about pregnancy !
3) What to do now ? Can we do a home pregnancy test ? its been 10 days since the sex and miss of periods.
4) At the worst case if she is pregnant (God please no) what can we do for abortion ?
Kindly answer fast so that we can get over this situation right away.
Thank You Doctor.

Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
1. Periods are commonly delayed because of stress related anxiety. It can also be due to irregular periods. Most likely it will happen in the next few days hopefully.

2. In unprotected sex, risk of pregnancy always persists. Please do not worry and wait some more time.

3. The home pregnancy test should be done at least 15 days after sex to get accurate results. So she must do it after 17th October 2014.

4. She must consult a gynecologist if pregnancy test is positive and patient identity is kept confidential. Privacy is maintained by all doctors.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing back with an update.

I can understand the anxiety you and your girl friend are in.

There are two situations when periods get delayed.

1. In a woman who always gets her periods on time. In this group if she has a 28 day cycle then she should wait one week (28+7 = 35 days)

2. In a woman with irregular cycles due to temporary causes like stress settle down and regularize spontaneously in about 3 months.

In your girl friend's case the delay is confusing because she is having irregular cycles. When 15 days are over since incident and if she still does not get her periods, then she can take a home pregnancy test and then consult a gynecologist irrespective of whether the test is positive or negative.

Even in absence of pregnancy, it is best to go to the gynecologist and she will start progesterone to get withdrawal bleeding and this will clear the entire situation. Though this can be done even tomorrow. It must be done after consulting gynecologist.

Hope your query is answered.

Okay . I did not understand the last paragraph . Can you explain further please ? What does start progesterone to get withdrawal bleeding mean ?
Also if within these 15 days (before 17th oct) her periods start, should I be relieved and believe that its clear that she is not pregnant and everything is normal ?
Thanks!

Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing back with an update.

In situations where periods are not regular and there is need to regularise bleeding then taking medroxyprogesterone pills for 5 days twice a day will cause bleeding after within a few days (2 days after stopping the pills) due to hormonal changes.

If periods start before 17th October then it is the best and you should be relieved.

Hope your query is answered.
