What Causes Depression Even After Using Antidepressants?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Jun 2014
Question: My husband had a (?breakdown?) early October, 2012. and was admitted to the psych hospital. he was diagnosed then with major depression. They sent him home after a week with medication and an appointment with a psychiatrist, social worker and therapist. The doctor siad yes he did have major depression, also ptsd and something called intermittent explosive disorder, which explains a lot of his behavior towards other people. He lost his job. We are on one income since October 2012. He does seem better with the explosive thing. Nothing else is getting better. He sleeps a lot. Sometimes it is hard for him to go outside by himself... He cannot make any big decisions (like, what can I do to help with finances?). He starts to do something, then starts to do something else. If I don't remind him constantly that he needs to stay on task, he gets frustrated with himself. He is a good person. He was wrongly incarcerated for 21 years hard time, then when he was released, they overturned the verdict. That is where the PTSD is from. He is now 53. He has been out almost 10 years. Please tell me, do we need to apply for disability? His doctor seems to think he might take a long time to heal.

I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.

Well you husband is on anti-depressant, anti psychotic and mood stabilizer as well. If still he is not improving then probably he is having a resistant depression. You psychiatrist is right in suggesting that he may not improve soon and may take a long time.
Yes you should apply for disability benefit. There is matked disability in depression and you should get the benefits. Regarding his treatment of depressikn I have found that among my such patientswith such severity of illness I have especially good results with the use of modified ECT and kitakine injection.
