What Causes Depression In Children?

default
Posted on Tue, 3 Jun 2014
Question: My child was recently hospitalized for depression. I was not given very much feedback as to what might be causing her depression, anxiey, and violent outburst. Up until age 12 she was a bright normal acting child who rarely acted out. She began cutting after experiencing some bullying at school. She is now lies without thought. Could this behavior be from a combination of these medication?

Hi,

Thanks for writing to us. Being a parent myself I completely understand your concern.

Before we move on with our discussion, let me inform you first that current behaviour of your daughter is not related to any drugs. These drugs does not cause any behavioural changes.

What exactly your daughter is experiencing currently is "Teen outburst". Teen outburst is typically characterized by rebel behaviour, confabulating when they are encountered by parents/ elders (this explains why she lies to you when confronted), love doing opposite things against parents advise, love to spend time with friends and less with family etc..

Most of us would have gone through this during our teens (probably we were unable to realize this and the ones who would have witnessed it would be our parents). What is required from your end currently is lots of patience and affectionate behaviour towards her. Do remember once your kids enter their Teens they cease to be your kids, But they become your friends. Have cool attitude, try to relax, dont impose things on her, try to have lots of discussion, take her out for picnic, movies, shopping, ease her. Probably these all shall help.

Feel free and let me know in case if you feel like discussing more about it. WOuld be glad to assist you.

Take care.

Best regards,
