What Causes Developmental Delay In A Child?

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Aug 2016
Question: My grandson, aged 20 months appears to me to be slightly developmentally delayed. He only started to crawl at 18 months, sit by himself at 14 months, and is only just starting to pull himself up at furniture. He does not respond to my voice if I am behind him so I also wonder if he has a hearing problem. As well he stiffens his arms and fists straight out in from of him when excited. He has little or no speech, only some odd sounds. Should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
There is cause for concern.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

I must say judging by your description you do have reason to be concerned. He seems to be late in reaching developmental milestones both regarding motor skills as well as language.
Usually regarding language he should be able to use single syllable words like mamma at about 1 year and say a few other words now at 18 months. Hearing issues may lead to such problems.
Also when it comes to actions like sitting and crawling he should be able to do them by 6-7 months and 1 year respectively. By 18 months should be able to walk.

Of course these numbers are not carved in stone, there are normal variations, but still the delays you describe are enough of a strong motive to ask for an evaluation by your pediatrician.

I hope to have been of help.
