What Causes Diarrhea, Abdominal Pain And Mucus In Stool?

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Jun 2016
Question: I had a case of gastroenteritis (suspect norovirus) with diarrhea, no vomiting. Lasted 24 hours. 12 days later still having mid abdominal pain and mucus stool.

On bland diet, not eating much. Taking probiotics, mylanta/pepto. Pain is pretty constant and dull. Almost thought ulcer, but my sister has the same thing. Stool has mucus and varies in color with constipation on and off. Pain is beneath breast bone and goes to the back at times.

Brief Answer:
This is a normal reaction as you are still on the road to recovery ma'am

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. The thing with a case of gastroenteritis is that it upsets the entire equilibrium in the digestive system. Both healthy and unhealthy organisms are destroyed, the inner gastric lining and intestinal lining is destroyed, etc.

This damage can take time to return and regrow, before it can return to performing its normal function. It can take up to a month or longer in some individuals to return to their normal function and potential.

I would at this point recommend the continuation of probiotics, bland liquid diet (which can lead to constipation), and the use of antacids (E.g. ranitidine or omeprazole, one tablet to be taken 15 minutes before each meal).

The pain that you are experiencing beneath the breast bone is most probably the lower part of the stomach or your upper intestine distended due to gas that is produced in excess during gastroenteritis. Make sure you take the above mentioned tablets orally as advised along with mylanta/pepto. Also:

+Drink plenty of water (at least 3 litres per day)
+Try to get your hands on an ORS (oral rehydration solution) that should be available in powder form (in sachets) or in liquid form in most grocery and medical stores.

I hope you find my response helpful. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
