What Causes Diarrhea Followed By Pale Stools?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Jan 2015
Question: I recently had a bout of diahhrea that required use of immodium. I took two tabs overnight and another tablet in the morning. I have had pale (but still light brown) stools and slightly elevated liver enzymes. I have well controlled hemochromatosis and am on cholesterol meds and so have quarterly liver enzyme followup tests. Are the lighter stools or slightly elevated liver enzymes cause for concern?

Brief Answer:
Not a cause for concern

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Slightly pale stools are common with diarrhea. It is not to be worried about. Please keep yourself well hydrated.
Immodium should not be used as it carries a very high risk of pushing a patient into sepsis. It stops the peristalsis of the colon completely and prevents washing out of the bacteria.

Please get back to me with the level of the liver enzymes including bilirubin and serum albumin so that I can help you interpret the results. Usually liver enzymes more than three times the normal limit is considered as significant.

I hope I was of help, please get back to me with the details. I am awaiting your reply

Thank you for your prompt response. My liver enzymes were only very slightly elevated and I have a followup test scheduled for the 19th which will be beyond the follow up time frames. I will follow up however if other questions arise.

Brief Answer:
Follow up

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for getting back

I would like you to get a liver function test along with PT, PTT and INR to know the functioning of the liver. If INR and serum albumin are normal then it is a properly functioning liver
