What Causes Diarrhea Post Food Intake?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Jun 2016
Question: For the last 2 1/2 weeks I've had diarrea within 1- 3 hours after I eat. Usually just once a day. No fever, nausea or blood in stools. Eating food sets it off. Feel fine otherwise. Imodium will slow it temporarily. No change in diet. Diarrea is 1/2 liquid, 1/2 soft stools.

Brief Answer:
About your diarrhea

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

When people have had diarrhea for more than 3 weeks, it is time to look into what might be causing it. You are coming up to that time mark, so I advise that you go in to see your doctor for a physical exam of your abdomen, stool studies (including stool cultures. liver enzymes, CBC, and chemistry panel blood tests. This may show the problem. You may have a gastrointestinal infection.

In the meantime, eat small amounts at a time but more often. This will put less stress on your digestive system. Avoid dairy right now (unless you've found that it agrees with you especially well) as with diarrhea, sometimes there is less of the enzyme needed to digest it. Eat easy to digest foods, and cook/steam vegetables well. Bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast are often advised for diarrhea.

If your loose watery stools are just once a day, there is less chance of dehydration and electrolyte imbalances, but keep hydrated.

But do go in to be seen as it's time to see what is going on.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information or clarification.

Brief Answer:
Your welcome!

Detailed Answer:
Yes, it's time to go to the doctor. One other thing to consider is taking a probiotic. This is a good idea if you have recently been on an antibiotic, but it might help even if not. There are many probiotics on the market - you can ask a pharmacist for his/her recommendations. Basically you want one with both lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus.

I hope you feel better soon.
