Posted on Mon, 24 Oct 2016
Question: I cut my leg on a rusty saw and within 4 hours it was red and aching it hurt to walk on my foot. The injury was small. Saw P.A. and was put on SMZ-Tmp ds tab for 10 days. PA thought I have MRSA. redness is gone, but I had diarrhea all night after the first dose. Next day was throwing up and don't feel like eating anything. Today will be my third day taking this medication. Should I get further advice with this problem?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
You had cellulitis at the site of injury and that is the reason for the redness. Now that the redness has gone away, that would be settling.
Your diarrhoea and GI symptoms are likely to be due to the SMZ-Tmp. You could try withholding it and see if your symptoms improve. If it does not or if the cellulitis returns, you should see a doctor, have yourself examined and tested.
You can continue your leg soaks and use a topical antibiotic cream like Bactroban.

Do get back to me if you have further queries.
Wish you quick recovery.
