Question: My son is 21 yrs. called me and said he started having diarrehea yesterday afternoon. complains of gas from his anal through groin and straight up to stomach. Felt good when he took a warm bath and he fell asleep for awhile. Ate bananas, oatmeal, toast, yogurt, blueberries today and drinking ginger and chamomile tea per my suggestion. He just called and when he does go it's black and kind of stringy. The pain goes away after he passes gas for awhile.

Brief Answer:
needs to see doctor right away

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question,
The blackness is a concern. It can be an indicator of bleeding in the upper intestinal system. For example if he had an ulcer in the stomach that was bleeding it could show up as blackness in the stool.
It may not be something serious, but with the concern up upper intestinal bleeding he really needs to be checked by a doctor today.
When we see bright red blood in the stool it is often from lower intestinal or colon bleeding or hemorrhoids, but the blackness in the stool could be a very serious sign. Please urge him to see a doctor or go to an urgent care today.
All the suggestions you and the doctor made are good ideas but he really needs to be checked to make sure the blackness he saw is not from bleeding.
Please let me know if you have further questions.
