What Causes Diarrhea With Episodes Of Fainting?

Posted on Sat, 26 Apr 2014
Question: My friend has had ongoing diarrhea....four weeks in duration. Includes periods or spell of faintness.....not exactly vertigo....but approximately the same time of day she experiences these "spells". History of high bp, age 59, female professional. Has had no health problems in the past. Also has had nausea and weight loss of about 10 lbs. in the same timeframe. Doctor has ruled out adrenal problems. Also has had thyroid and a myriad of other tests.....even a 24 hour urine test. This is an otherwise healthy person of normal body weight and other than bp pills has no other daily meds.

Brief Answer: Might be Hypertensive medications. Detailed Answer: Hello there, Welcome to Healthcare magic, Nice to meet you here, As your friend is on chronic diarrhea for 4 weeks, and tested negative on all possible lab tests. Am just concerned about her drugs for hypertension increased blood pressure], as some drugs used in hypertension cause diarrhea [eg, potassium sparing diuretics cause hyperkalemia and heavy water loss resulting diarrhea]. So, I would like to know from your side, what medications she was taking for her hypertension. In such case, simple adjustment of dosage will bring solution to her problem. I also need you to rule out diabetes as it is the most common cause of chronic diarrhea in uncontrolled ones. Weight loss, fatigue are due to the predisposing diarrhea, it will be reverted once we find the cause for the problem. Follow back with the medication. Take care. Dr.surendiran.g

My friend (sister in law) is on the generic for Cozar: Losartan.....originally it was 50 mg daily. Now she takes that dosage twice daily! (Her dr. increased dosage with onset of this issue) I talked with her this am and she states that her primary complaint now is nausea and no appetite. The diarrhea has slowed.....and she states that her stool is not formed but is less frequent and has a little more substance. This is an individual with a strong work ethic that would never miss work....but simply doesn't feel well and has no stamina at this time. The GI doctor did a scan of her intestinal tract....no scoping or anything. XXXXXXX has NOT traveled out of the country...I was wondering if even a parasite could be an issue? When she has these" "faint "feelings she was given antivert or an anti-anxiety drug. This is not an individual that has ever suffered from anxiety of any kind....I think her physicians are scratching their heads. She does a supervisory job in a large corporation, but has been there 30 years and said she never feels any sort of anxiousness due to her job. I think that these spells are either after her bp med is wearing off...later in the afternoon or possibly because of it! Please advise. Thank you!

Brief Answer: Monitor blood pressure at regular interval. Detailed Answer: Hello there, Nice to meet you again, I have read your query and answered your questions in order. 1. Am happy to know that her diarrheal episode are reducing after moderating the dose of Losartan [antihypertensive drug]. 2. Since, sudden decrease in blood pressure results in giddiness and nausea, I advice to monitor her blood pressure level periodically. 3. As her bowel is restoring, it takes some time to produce bulky stools, so nothing to worry about stool volume and it has no pathology on GIT [gastro intestinal tract], that is reason the GIT scan and scopy showed no findings. 4. I do not feel these are related to parasite infestation as scopies are normal. Hope helped you, Feel free to ask future queries. Take care. Dr.surendiran.g
