What Causes Diarrhoea, bloating And Constipation After Gallbladder Removal?

default
Posted on Fri, 27 Jun 2014
Question: Hello. I had a gallbladder removal three months ago including an ERCP procedure to remove gallstones . Since then, I've experienced diarrhea, bloating, constipation and yellow stool. The diarrhea happens when I eat fatty food and dairy products.
I've been given pancrelipase , but unfortunately it made things worse for my situation.

When I had blood tests two weeks after the surgery, my ALT was 39 and and the AST 25. Last week new results have shown ALT 74 and AST 48. The doctor sent me to blood tests for Hepatitis A, B, C. I'm currently waiting for the results and I'm really stressed out. I don't see how what I suffer from has got to do with Hepatitis. I read that Hepatitis has different symptoms like yellowish skin and fever, symptoms I'm not having.

I don't really understand what's happening to my body. My problem falls through the cracks. Each doctor says something different, but I still feel that nobody sends me to the right tests. I finally met yesterday a gastroenterologist and he gave me Cholestyramine. I hope it will help me this round.

Do you think I should be concerned about the Hepatitis or my liver?

Brief Answer:
Wait for hepatitis tests results first...

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

Diarrhea is one of the symptoms associated with cholecystectomy. I agree with your GI decision on starting cholestyramine. I advise to be careful with foods/drinks you take to avoid diarrhea and yellow stools.

With regards to your liver enzymes, I find them slightly elevated. Apart hepatitis, other causes include:
- common viral infections
- recent use of drugs

I suggest to wait for the final analysis of hepatitis before running into final conclusions. No need to be concerned unnecessarily.

Please take medications as prescribed and follow your doctor's advice accurately.

All the best! Do write me back if you have further queries!
